First things first, it’s pronounced “Sole Duck”, not “Sole Duce” or “Sole Duke”. 🦆
Now that that is out of the way, Sol Duc Falls is undoubtedly one of my all-time favorite hikes – ever – and a must-do for anyone visiting western Washington State! This trail and its stunning waterfall are incredibly beautiful, making it a top recommendation for anyone exploring Olympic National Park, alongside the equally impressive Hall of Mosses (The Hoh Rainforest of Olympic National Park.). While most of western Washington is breathtakingly scenic, Sol Duc Falls is truly exceptional.

Like many destinations within Olympic National Park, reaching Sol Duc Falls requires a wee bit of a journey. Nonetheless, it’s relatively easy and absolutely worthwhile. Unfortunately, during our first trip to Washington in November 2023, we were robbed of the chance to visit due to a mudslide that blocked the only highway accessing the trail 👎🏼. Thankfully, when we returned almost exactly one year later, in October 2024, the highway was open and clear, allowing us to finally experience this incredible hike.

We stayed in the same Airbnb as during our first visit (https://www.airbnb.com/l/sfzZ8q9g) in the medium-sized city of Port Angeles. Situated about an hour northeast of Sol Duc Falls, Port Angeles is a convenient home base for this hike (and many others).

While Port Angeles is the largest city in the area, another option is Forks, Washington (calling all Twilight fans – hoa hoa hoa hoa). Located about 55 minutes southwest of Sol Duc Falls, Forks, Washington: The Home of Twilight. ✨ offers several motel-style lodging options. However, if you have the option between the two, I highly recommend staying in Port Angeles if you’re looking for Airbnbs or larger (and nicer) hotels.

If you’re looking for a more rustic, cabin-style experience, consider staying near Lake Crescent (Lake Crescent: Washington State’s 2nd-Deepest Lake.), approximately 35 minutes northwest of Sol Duc. Options include Lake Crescent Lodge, Log Cabin Resort, and a limited selection of overpriced private cabins available through Airbnb and Vrbo.
Reaching the Sol Duc Falls trailhead is relatively easy compared to numerous other hikes I’ve done… granted, there are no rocks or mudslides 😑. If coming from any of the areas mentioned above, there are only two main roads one must travel on to reach the falls: Highway 101 and Sol Duc Road. Once you turn off Highway 101, follow Sol Duc Road for about 30 minutes until you reach the trailhead parking lot, where the road dead ends.

The trail to the falls is a 1.8-mile out-and-back hike rated as “easy”. Like most trails in Washington, expect it to be muddy and damp due to the region’s consistent rainfall, especially in the spring, fall, and winter (basically any time other than summer). The hike typically takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete, depending on how many stops you make to soak in the surrounding beauty of the forest or at Sol Duc Falls. When you reach the falls, you’ll find a wooden bridge that feels transposed out of a fairytale, along with a large wooden deck providing multiple vantage points to view the falls. Be advised that this is a popular trail, so be prepared to encounter other hikers. Dogs are not allowed, so please leave the pups at home.

Due to Sol Duc Falls being a popular trail, I strongly recommend arriving as early as possible or visiting later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. We arrived around 9:20am, and 8–10 cars were already in the parking lot. When we finished the hike and left around 10:40am, the cars had grown to about 20–25. This activity level is pretty typical for trails within Olympic National Park – as the morning progresses, the number of visitors steadily increases. It’s just the way it is for the area. Like other areas of the park, winter is not the ideal time to visit due to frequent snow and icy conditions. The best time to explore is between May and October. Porta-potty-style restrooms are conveniently available in the parking lot.

Overall, if someone were to ask me to name the top three places I’ve visited in Olympic National Park, Sol Duc Falls would easily make that list, alongside Hall of Mosses and Staircase Rapids Loop. It’s a pretty easy hike, allowing you to focus on the beauty of the surrounding area rather than constantly focusing on catching your breath or maintaining your footing. The trail itself is not only stunning but also relaxing and peaceful. While many spots within Olympic National Park feel like they’re straight out of a storybook, Sol Duc Falls truly takes the cake with its charming bridge and powerful waterfall. Don’t miss the chance to experience this magical place – assuming no mudslides make the decision for you!
