If you visit the vibrant and colorful Portuguese island of Madeira, stop at Pico dos Barcelos Viewpoint. Perched at 1,164 feet (355 meters) above sea level, it offers stunning views of the city of Funchal, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding natural amphitheater-shaped valley. From the vantage point of Pico dos Barcelos Viewpoint, you can treat yourself to a sweeping panoramic view that you cannot get anywhere else within the city.
The viewpoint is located in the parish of Santo António, notably the childhood home of soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo (and still home to his mother), where his world-famous career kicked off, pun intended. It is easily accessible, albeit with a relatively small parking lot swamped with tourist vans when we visited. The site features an observatory, shaded benches, and is surrounded by shops and eateries offering local products and regional food.
On a clear day, the viewpoint offers more than just views of Funchal. You can see the Desertas Islands, located about 9 miles away, a trio of small volcanic islands named Ilhéu Chão, Deserta Grande, and Bugio (sadly, it was slightly too foggy for us to see them). Also at the center of the viewpoint stands a large cross dedicated to Jesus Christ, surrounded by four large trees and plenty of bench space to sit and take in the surrounding views.
We visited Pico dos Barcelos Viewpoint around 9:30 am on a Tuesday, and the small parking lot was starting to see some traffic. In terms of people, however, thankfully, it was light and not overwhelming. While the viewpoint offers a fantastic opportunity to take in panoramic views of the city and surrounding area, there isn’t much else to do unless you wander into the nearby shops and restaurants. The restrooms at the viewpoint were closed during our visit, a common issue noted in other reviews. We used a nearby bakery/souvenir shop restroom, which we had to pay to use (unfortunately, this is usually the case with restrooms in Portugal). However, the restroom is free if you buy something from the shop. We learned this the hard way by using the restroom for a fee before buying a magnet!
Overall, while there are countless things to do in Funchal and across the island of Madeira, a visit to Pico dos Barcelos Viewpoint should definitely make your list. It’s a quick stop and somewhere you can take in stunning city and ocean views. It easily fits into any itinerary, even if you only have one day, as we did. If you do have more time, you can explore the nearby shops and grab a bite to eat, relax on one of the benches, read a book, or gaze out over the ocean. Whatever you choose, don’t miss the chance to enjoy these breathtaking panoramic views!
